Talking about bullying classroom discussion starters
The Talking about bullying classroom discussion starters support students to explore their ideas about bullying, and talk about what they can do about it individually and as a school community.
Classroom discussion starters have been developed for Years 3–4, 5–6, 7–9 and 10–12, as well as some suitable for any year level. However, any topic could be adapted for any age.
The Talking about bullying classroom discussion starters have been developed in response to teacher requests for shorter activities to conduct in the classroom.
As a short activity (approximately 20 minutes), each discussion will be only a brief foray into the topic. The need for additional work or exploration in the future may be indicated by students' comments
How to use the classroom discussion starters
The document How to use (PDF, 576KB), word version (DOCX, 418KB) provides guidelines for facilitating a community of inquiry, links to key documents and references, and an overview of all inquiry questions.
The teacher's role in the discussion is to facilitate the process, rather than provide their own views or solutions.
The only preparation required is to download the definition of bullying appropriate for the age of the students. Some topics suggest recording students' responses on a whiteboard.
As a fun activity to conclude the discussion, teachers may like to provide the Make your own National Day of Action Poster (which can be found in the School materials to download section) for students to add their own anti-bullying message and picture.
